Hi, my name is Lucy, I am in 8th grade in Massachusetts. For my end-of-year Social Studies Civic Action Project, I have decided to work with Choose Love Movement and use Barbara Fredrickson's research on the importance of connection.
My reason for taking this action is that throughout my life I have heard stories of people who did not feel like they belonged and that they turned it around. I have also met people who have turned their extremely horrible experiences into something so empowering and useful to the world that I believe their programs, advice, and stories should be shared with people of all ages. I believe that this is a good action to take because it has been proven that the feeling of belonging humans feel when they just talk or interact with someone can fill their need to belong. I also believe that putting up posters and sharing the ideas and facts behind the ideas will help people to be more compassionate and less lonely. This is an appropriate action for my project because making connections to others around us not only helps us to be compassionate but also helps to make us feel less lonely which goes back to my topic of mental health. Furthermore, if everyone in even just our eighth grade does three of these little moments of connection a day then hopefully people will be more united, less lonely, and more compassionate.
